Song Credits for "My Gift" by Kelly Delaveris

The Story

This project has been about giving.  My mom, Miriam Crum, was a giver.  She gave me life.  She gave me love.  She gave my kids love.  She was an incredible mother and grandmother.  She fought cancer three times:  breast cancer first, colon cancer 10 years later, and 5 years after that, lung cancer.  She fought lung cancer until the end; she never gave up.  I admire her for that.

When Mark Puskarich approached me in May of this year about giving my time to record a song for his Christmas CD, “yes” was the only thing I could say.  In July, when he gave me time at his recording studio to do whatever I wanted to do, the wheels started turning.  Since Mark had offered to give me studio time, it only made sense to me to give proceeds from the sale of the CD to cancer research.  I knew I had an engagement coming up with some of my favorite musicians:  Jim Rupp on drums, Sean Ferguson on piano, and my son Nikolas on bass.  I talked with them about giving their time to record, and they were all for it. I can’t tell you how rewarding it was to record with Nikolas, and to give him a chance to play and record with such an accomplished drummer as Jim.

I also have a passion for Brazilian music – specifically music from the Bossa Nova era – late 1950s-1970s.  I have been singing this music in Portuguese for about 10 years and have always wanted to record it. This was the perfect vehicle. I asked my Brazilian band of Brett Allen, Chris Berg, Danny Aguiar and Joe Nelson to give their time to record, and they graciously complied.  So I have a project with my favorite music and my favorite people, and the proceeds are going to a very worthy and personal cause.

The bottom line is that I was given a gift – my voice and my ears. My life has been truly blessed, and it’s time for me to give back.

To all the musicians who gave their time and talent to this project - I love you all; to my dad, Jimmy Crum, for introducing me to jazz ; to Vaughn Wiester, for exposing me to Brazilian music; to Elizabeth, for her brains; and last but certainly not least, to my husband, because "music happens at night".
